Despite the Indian summer we have had over the last few weeks, summer seems to be truly behind us. Looking back on it, the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) and Pavilion have had one of the busiest summer seasons in recent years! Summer show ticket sales were up by a massive 11% compared to last year.
A total of nearly 93,000 people walked through the doors of the BIC and Pavilion this summer. Over 61,000 of those people flocked to the Pavilion to see popular shows such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, the Rat Pack Live, That’ll Be the Day and the Wiggles. Nearly 32,000 people visited the BIC to see the international production, Beauty and the Beast on Ice, performed by the Russian Ice Stars who have over 300 competition medals between them. This figure also takes into account entertainment shows such as Jay Z and Jimmy Carr.
The summer season at the BIC and Pavilion officially runs from July until mid-September.
Gail Collins, Ticketing and Marketing Manager at the BIC and Pavilion said of the sales: “What’s really important is that we are succeeding in putting on more shows for the public over the summer season – there were 3% more performances over 19% more performance days this summer. To boost ticket sales is obviously great but what matters is that as venues we offer a choice of shows for our audiences.”
Peter Gunn, Managing Director of the BIC and Pavilion said: “Our aim is to attract quality shows to both venues and in return cater for both our local audience including residents and tourists who flock to Bournemouth for their holidays, as well as those who travel to see shows from further afield.”
Further analysis of the figures shows that over the summer season 57.6% of tickets were sold to local residents, 13.6% to regional visitors and the remaining 28.8% were sold to people from outside the region, including tourists. Gail Collins adds: “The weather during the summer may have had some impact on our increased ticket sales, but it isn’t a coincidence that we put on more performances this year, making shows more accessible for people.”
Upcoming shows at the Pavilion include Joe Brown’s 50th Anniversary Tour, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s Classical Hits, Dylan Moran and Gotta Sing Gotta Dance. You can see A Night at the Opera Starring Jonathan Ansell, An Evening of Clairvoyance with Psychic Medium Colin Fry and the Mighty Boosh at the BIC over the next few weeks.
