Another key step has been taken towards the restoration of Bournemouth Pavilion with the installation of purpose-made windows.
As building work on the dance centre storms ahead all the windows facing the gardens and the sea are being replaced, bringing the building back to its 1920s heyday.
Constructing the windows has been a long-process; moulds were created from the original ‘art deco’ cast iron sections and a specialist firm was appointed to create the energy efficient aluminium frames which are in keeping with the rest of the Listed building.
Cllr Bob Chapman, portfolio holder for major projects at Bournemouth Council, said: “Our work so far has transformed the outside of the Pavilion. Two years ago we got rid of an unsightly 1970s extension and since then we’ve dreamt of the moment we could get rid of the monstrous, now rotting windows which were installed in the 1950s. We’re delighted that moment has arrived.
“Now we’re dreaming of the moment that part of the building, which has been redundant for too long, comes back to life with activity… and it’s just months away.”
Internal work on the construction of Pavilion Dance, a world-class dance centre for the South West, is progressing on schedule. The centre, which occupies the previously vacant Ocean Room at the seaside end of the building, now has clearly defined spaces for rehearsals, performances and changing – it’s due to open in the autumn.
Pavilion Dance, which will be run by Dance South West in partnership with Bournemouth Council and BH Live (the town's new leisure and cultural trust), will be a venue for everyone, whatever age, ability or preferred type of dance. The best regional, national and international dance companies will also perform there. It’s one of a series of projects delivered through the Town Centre Vision.
