Liberal Democrats to Bring Over £8m to Bournemouth
The Liberal Democrats are back in Bournemouth this month, holding their annual conference at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC). An expected 6,000 delegates, plus media, staff and exhibitors, will flock to Bournemouth on Saturday 13th until Wednesday 17th September.
The five day event is estimated to bring £8.46m to Bournemouth’s economy through business tourism. The annual conference will see Nick Clegg address his first full conference, since he succeeded Sir Menzies Campbell as party leader.
The conference will be officially opened by Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole on Saturday 13th September. The main plenary conference will take place in the Windsor Hall with training and fringe meetings being held across the Centre. The exhibition, which will feature approximately 70 stands, is being held in the Solent Hall.
Clive Tyers, Head of Conferences, Exhibitions and Events at the BIC said: “We have forged a long standing relationship with the Liberal Democrats over the years so it is great to see them back at the BIC.”
Simon Hughes, Liberal Democrat Party President said: “We are delighted to be returning to Bournemouth for our autumn conference 2008, as well as in 2009. The BIC’s facilities, together with such a fantastic resort destination make it a great choice for us.”
Tyers adds: “We regularly host the big political parties but we recognise that Bournemouth’s appeal isn’t just that we have the largest conference and exhibition venue on the South Coast, we are a premier UK costal destination and that speaks for itself. Events like the Air Festival and new attractions such as Europe’s first artificial Surf Reef help to put Bournemouth on the map and make it the destination of choice for event organisers, as their delegates can not only enjoy a professional event but also all the entertainment and activities Bournemouth has to offer outside the conference walls.”
The Bournemouth International Conference Bureau (BICB) acted as the accommodation agency for the event, assisting in booking hotels for the expected 6,000 delegates.
