Bournemouth Flies the Green Flag

Bournemouth has raised its green credentials by winning the bid to host the prestigious Green Flag Award winners event next month. Event organisers, Keep Britain Tidy, are expecting 1,800 delegates to the 2 day event, which is taking place on Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd of July at the Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre and Ballroom.

The event is split into four award ceremonies which will be held in the Pavilion’s Theatre, with a formal dinner in the Pavilion’s Ballroom. Wildlife expert and TV presenter Michaela Strachan will present the awards. Paul Todd, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, said: “The Bournemouth Pavilion is an ideal location for the event with its large theatre and ballroom and its situation overlooking Bournemouth’s wonderful Green Flag Award winning lower gardens. There’s an excitement around this year’s event, what with it being the Pavilion’s 80th Anniversary, the anticipated significant rise in awards and the fact that Bournemouth is the host; a town committed to flying the green flag.”

The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. The award scheme, launched in 1996, recognises and rewards the best green spaces.

Managing Director of the Pavilion and its sister venue the Bournemouth International Centre, Peter Gunn said of the awards: “It’s a real honour to host the Green Flag Award event. Bournemouth is internationally recognised as being clean, lean and green; being host reinforces this message. With over £500,000 being injected into the town from delegate expenditure, the event is win-win situation for Bournemouth.”

With a record of Green Flag Awards expected, the event looks set to impress. Last year 743 parks and green places received a Green Flag Award but this year the number of sites receiving the top accolade is set to rise substantially and could well reach the 1,000 mark. The reason being that more green spaces, often found in obscure places like allotments, hospital grounds and shopping centres, are now being considered for awards.
