Michael Winner Honoured at Police Federation Conference in Bournemouth

The 2009 Police Federation Annual Conference at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) this week, which marked the association’s 90th anniversary, saw some famous faces in the keynote speakers line up.

Thursday 14th May - the final day of the week’s conference - saw Michael Winner honoured by the Joint Central Committee. He was presented with the commended Federation Bowl for his work as founder of the Police Memorial Trust, which was established to honour policemen and women who have been killed on duty. The renowned film producer received a standing ovation from a packed auditorium at the BIC. The award was timely as the trust celebrated its 25th birthday this year, something it shares with the BIC who celebrates the same milestone later in the year.

A day earlier, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith took to the stage, where she paid tribute to nine police officers who have lost their lives including a Bournemouth-based detective. She was unable to escape the furore surrounding MP’s expenses however. Other key note speakers included Vernon Coaker, Minister of State, and David Ruffley, Shadow Police Minister.

More than 2,000 delegates attended the conference and injected an estimated £3.6m into the local economy through delegate spend in the town. Unusually the event saw three conferences run alongside each other for Sergeants, Inspectors and Constables; made possible by the venue’s four large halls which can cater for substantial delegate numbers. The Joint Central Conference then united the thousands of delegates back in the main hall.

The Police Federation Annual Conference will be back at the BIC in 2010 and recently confirmed that they will be returning every year after that until 2013! Peter Gunn, Managing Director of the BIC and Pavilion said: “That such a valuable and longstanding client held the annual conference, which marks their 90th anniversary, at the BIC in what is also our 25th year, makes 2009 even more special for us. Speakers like Jacqui Smith and Michael Winner were certainly a pull for the delegates.”
