Thoracic Conference Returns to BIC

The British Thoracic Society’s Annual Conference comes to Bournemouth this week, returning to the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) for the first time since 2001. 500 plus delegates are expected to attend the two day event, which means a boost of approximately £300,000 for the local economy through delegate expenditure.

The Annual Conference opens on Thursday 25th June in the BIC’s Tregonwell Hall, an exhibition will also run alongside the main conference sessions in the BIC’s Purbeck Hall featuring over 30 exhibitors including GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca. The event is also making use of the BIC’s multitude of break out space outside of the plenary meeting taking place in the Tregonwell Hall. The conference sees Sue Hill, Chief Scientific Officer for the Department of Health, take to the floor and topics like obesity and respiration and changes in respiratory medicine through the ages will be covered.

Peter Gunn, Managing Director of the BIC said: “It’s great to see the British Thoracic Society back in Bournemouth. Over the last few years it has been a deliberate decision to target the medical association market and we have made significant inroads in doing this, having hosted some of the biggest national and international medical events in the industry.”

Recent statistics value Bournemouth’s business tourism at £115m, of which the BIC and Pavilion contribute £65m annually through the conferences and exhibitions staged at the venues. The remaining £50m is a result of conferences, events and meetings at other venues in Bournemouth, often facilitated by the Bournemouth International Conference Bureau (BICB).

The Annual Conference closes on Friday 26th June. Peter Gunn adds: “Just as the conference ends we are preparing for two evening performances of Britain’s Got Talent Live 2009 on Friday night in the Windsor Hall, demonstrating the flexibility of the venue and showcasing our ability to host two very different types of event.”
