The Bournemouth International Centre (BIC), reports encouraging Business Tourism figures for 2009/10
The BIC is pleased to announce that in 2009/10, conference, exhibition and business events held in the Bournemouth conurbation, have injected approximately £122 million into the local economy, helping to sustain around 4400 local jobs in tourism, leisure, hospitality and retail.
During the period April 2009 - March 2010, the BIC and Pavilion in Bournemouth hosted 92 conferences, exhibitions and business events attracting over 81,000 conference delegates and exhibition visitors, which in turn generated 214,000 overnight stays in local accommodation. With smaller conferences, meetings and events held in other venues and hotels throughout the town, Bournemouth’s place in the UK as one of the leading destinations for business tourism has, once again, been firmly secured.
Peter Gunn, Chief Executive of BH Live, Bournemouth’s new Leisure and Cultural Trust, explains the importance behind these results. He said: “The positive impact on Bournemouth as a result of conference, exhibition and event business, is significant to the local economy, helping to secure jobs for people in tourism, hospitality, retail and leisure. It is very encouraging that despite the effects of the recession, we are in a position to report optimistic figures, demonstrating the resilience of the Business Tourism industry in Bournemouth.”
Clive Tyers, Head of Conferences, Exhibitions and Events, BIC/Pavilion and ‘Meet Bournemouth’, the recently re-branded Bournemouth Venue Booking service added: “The results for 2009/10 are absolutely fantastic and with enquiry levels for conferences, exhibitions, meetings, seminars in the town continuing to be buoyant into 2011 and beyond, we are already working closely with local hotels and venues to uphold this trend and secure future business for the town.”
