Over 500 people ‘quickstepped’ to the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) for a free Dance Day. With a variety of dance classes to participate in, led by local dance companies from 11.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday November 8th, people danced the day away in the Tregonwell Hall! The different dance types on show included Street, Jazz, Line, Funk, Ballroom, Aerobics, Mojive and New Zumba.
With local MC Guy Thomas, the event was opened by a Welcome Parade led by Councillor Carol Ainge and Mayor Councillor Stephen Chappell. First on stage was Claire Carty with her Dance Aerobics class. Nice and Easy Dance Group then took over with their ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ inspired foxtrot; the group also demonstrated a waltz and cha-cha during the day.
Visitors got into the spirit and were soon up line dancing with Olive Cooper of U3A. Mojive dancing to music from Madonna to Sinatra was then followed by a performance by Steppin-Out, watched by an awe inspired audience. It was back to the dance floor afterwards to join in with the Wessex Dance School’s dancers. Up next was the Pure Dance School who got the younger visitors up on the dance floor to learn funky Street dancing.
The day finished with a Zumba class enjoyed by all the ages and a fantastic performance by the Pure Funk Commercial Dance Workshop Co, which received a standing ovation!
Organiser of the event, Councillor for Bournemouth Borough Council, Pat Lewis said: “We’re already looking forward to next year after such a successful first event; we had to open the balcony area in the Tregonwell Hall due to demand! My aim was to bring together all age groups for a good time and we definitely achieved that.”
The event was supported by the Lions International, Bournemouth Borough Council, the BIC, Rotary International and sponsored by Spot Turn. Bournemouth Borough Councillors Beverley Dunlop, Carol Ainge, Anne Rey, David Smith and Ted Taylor assisted Councillor Lewis in the organisation of the event.
