e-Safety Conference Back in Bournemouth

Tomorrow (27th November) will see the South West Grid for Learning’s (SWGfL) e-safety Conference at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC). The event is the third of three one day conferences; the first and second were held at Torquay and Bristol.

Held at the BIC last year, the conference will build on the work that SWGfL has done to promote e-safety in the region. E-safety has been covered in the media and is becoming more important as the internet is increasingly becoming more accessible to children; a 2007 Ofcom Report called Social Networking quotes that 49% of 8-17 year olds and 16% of 16-19 year olds have a social networking profile. The one-day programme of seminars and keynote speeches, in the BIC’s Tregonwell Hall, will deliver crucial information on the latest developments in the e-safety arena to approximately 200 attendees.

Aimed at enabling all educators to share good practice and gain ideas to take back to school, it is hoped that the support for and the safe use of the internet and related technologies is promoted not only in the classroom but within the wider technology.

Helen Penn of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) centre, will talk about topics ranging from how young people are placing themselves in dangerous positions and what professionals can proactively do to protect them. A group from Plymouth-based theatre group ‘Plymkids’ will present an original piece based on the theme of e-safety.

A variety of workshops will be held throughout the day based on various themes, including Risks to 5-11yrs online, Peer approaches to e-safety, E-safety scenarios and Home Access. The final keynote speech will be delivered by members of the SWGfL Youth Panel.
