Students Have Designs on Pavilion’s 80th Anniversary

Local students from Ferndown Upper School have taken part in a competition to design the official poster to celebrate the Pavilion’s 80th anniversary next year.

The town’s historic and well-loved Pavilion Theatre and Ballroom will be celebrating 80 years at the centre of Bournemouth’s entertainment industry in March 2009. The grade II listed building was officially opened on Tuesday 19th March 1929 and is still one of the largest provincial theatres in the UK.

19 students took part in the project to design a poster for the Pavilion’s 80th anniversary and presented their research, design evolution and final ideas to a panel of three staff from the Pavilion. They are all studying for a Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design at Ferndown Upper School, a course that has been on the school’s curriculum since 1999. All students are 18 years plus and are looking to continue studying course like graphic design and art at University.

David Pilkington, Director of Arts at Ferndown Upper School said: “We approached the Pavilion at just the right time. They were planning the marketing around their anniversary celebrations and agreed to let the students use the topic as a project for their course. Presenting to the panel and working towards the design brief was invaluable preparation for the working world.”

The winning students, Holly Taylor and Lindsay Tough were chosen to work together, combining their design ideas to produce the final poster, which will be displayed in Bournemouth during this year to promote the Pavilion’s 80th anniversary.

Gail Collins, Event Sales and Marketing Manager at the BIC and Pavilion said: “The standard of work produced for this competition was phenomenal; a big thanks to everyone that took part. There were many designs we could have worked with but two stood out that incorporate both the messages and design ideas we wanted to convey in the poster. It was an interesting process, especially to see the different interpretations that the students took.”

With such a high standard, all 19 designs will be displayed, alongside a design introduction written by the students, in the Pavilion during this year.
