UCU, the University and College Union are holding a three day ‘lecture’ at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC). Up to 500 delegates are expected to attend the annual congress which kicks off today, where separate annual meetings for UCU’s further and higher education sectors will also take place. The congress is the annual forum where future policies are decided.
UCU is the largest trade union and professional association for academics, lecturers, trainers, researchers and academic-related staff working in further and higher education throughout the UK. It represents more than 120,000 members.
Clive Tyers, Head of Conferences, Exhibitions and Events said: “We’re known as a university town and with Bournemouth University listed as 54th in the country by the Complete University Guide, it makes sense for UCU to host their annual congress here. The congress rounds up what has been a busy month for the BIC, including three major association events – the Police Federation, RAFA and the Baptist Assembly – and will contribute just over £400k to the local economy through delegate spend.”
Last at BIC in 2007, this years UCU annual congress will take place today in the Solent Hall, with an opening address from Sasha Callaghan, President of UCU. The Higher Education Conference will take place in the Solent Hall on Thursday 28th May, with the Further Education Sector Conference running alongside it in the Tregonwell Hall. A final round up of the main congress sessions will take place on Friday 29th May. The National Executive Committee met on Tuesday 26th May where there was an induction for new members.
An exhibition will run alongside the congress for three days in the Purbeck Hall, featuring nearly 30 exhibitors.
